Hi! Welcome to Room 202 and First Grade!
I'm Becky Nicholson and I'm delighted to be your child's first grade teacher! I have been a teacher in Minneapolis since 1989. I did my undergraduate teacher training at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. I was born and raised in Iowa and am very proud to be an Iowa girl-GO HAWKEYES! I graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a Master's Degree in Special Education with and emphasis in Emotional Behavioral Disorders and Learning Disabilities. I also completed and passed (yippee!) my National Board Certification in 2000.
I began as a special education teacher at Hale with my most special teaching partner, Madison, our yellow labrador retriever. She played a big part in the lives of many Hale children through her ten years in the classroom. It was difficult adjusting to teaching without her. I don't think I'll ever really get used to it.
My current teaching partner is my mom. The children call her "Grandma Betty". She volunteers in the classroom when she is here visitng from Iowa. She is a retired teacher of 38 years and loves each moment she gets to be in class with the kids.
In addition to first grade and special education, I've also taught second grade at Hale. Further, I've taught at Richard Green, Wilder and Seward prior to coming to Hale. I have a fourth grade daughter, Bariana Perkins, who attends Hale. I am very happily married to Brian Perkins who was a Social Studies teacher at Ramsey and now teaches at Washburn. The other two members of our family are our dog, Jackson, and our cat, Gertrude McFuzz.
We live in Farmington and enjoy our small "Iowa-like" community except on snowy days when our commute is terrifying! My passion outside of school is the a capella harmony show chorus in which I sing, the City of Lakes Chorus (www.cityoflakes.org). COL is over 100 amazingly energetic, talented ladies and is the most fun you could ever have as a grown up! I've also been a dance and piano teacher for 20 years. I had my own dance studio, 2HIP, for 15 years before we had our Bariana.
I love being a teacher; it's what I always wanted to be when I grew up! I feel so very fortunate to get to do what I love to do at Hale!
