We are working on patterns in math. We have worked on color patterns, number patterns, and shape patterns. We can name a pattern, take a pattern apart, and extend a pattern.
We are beginning an author study on Mem Fox. This will tie into our study on Australia which is the continent/country the first grade does for culture night which is May 11, 2017. Besides reading and discussing Mem Fox books we will be learning about Australia.
Wednesday - gym
We Got new carpet spots this week. We read a funny story this week called Way Out West Lives A Coyote Named Frank. We learned about alliteration. Ask me if I can give you a sentence with alliteration. (Words that start with the same letter J)
We had our tornado drill today. It went great and we did a perfect job of tucking and ducking. We also observed our aquariums today to see how they have changed. We are learning about pond snails and guppies.
We finished week two of the Yum Power challenge. We will be doing it for two one more week. We are trying hard to eat at least 5 fruits or veggies a day. We had sketchpad time today.

We are working on graphic organizers and taking notes on fiction and nonfiction text. We read the book Clean Your Room Harvey Moon. Ask me what Harvey did to clean his room. We observed our aquatic plants in science. Ask me what two plants are in our aquarium.
We are beginning to look at number patterns in math. We have a penny jar and we are looking at variables and constant. It is also teaching us about skip counting. We start with something in the penny jar then add the same amount each day and write what is in the penny jar now. Ask me.
We are spending time in reading looking at an atlas and learning about an atlas. Ask me what an atlas is. Also ask me about the seven continents and which continent we live on. Other questions would be what is a legend and what is a compass rose.
We had our music program today! We did a fantastic job! We got new organisms for our aquariums today. Ask me what is now living in our freshwater habitat.
We finished week one of the Yum Power challenge. We will be doing it for two more weeks.
We have been doing an amazing job of taking notes and turning them into sentences about our animals. We have also been editing and writing a final copy. This research project has been a lot of work and a lot of fun.
We finished the reports today. Watch for a folder to come home this week with all of my work in it. We brought our plants home yesterday. This was the first part of our science unit on organisms. Next we will be looking at water plants and then fish.
We had the zoo mobile today. They brought some of the animals we wrote about. We got to see an opossum, a horned owl, a bull snake, and some hissing cockroaches. We also got to touch the snake, some animal furs, and the hissing cockroach. It was a great day.
We celebrated Cooper’s birthday today. His mom, who is also a first grade teacher, came in and read to us. It was a fun way to start our day. We had the jump rope for heart assembly today.

Monday, April 10th School resumes
We are working on our animal research projects. This ties into our zoo mobile visit. We are taking notes and turning our notes into sentences. We will be editing and writing final copies. We hope to be done by spring break.
We are finishing up unit 4 in math and will be moving on to unit 5 next week. Unit 5 will be looking at patterns in numbers. We are working hard on story problems this week.
We celebrated Amelia’s birthday today. Her dad came in and read to us. We love guest readers. We observed our plants in science and wrote about the changes that have taken place.
We looked at moss and a tree seedling in science. We drew pictures and wrote about how they are alike and how they are different. We built a terrarium with the moss and tree seedling.
We are bringing our math workbooks home today. Don’t worry if there are pages not done. We don’t do every page in the book. I can do them at home if I want to. We had sketchpad time today!

We are starting our research projects this week. We will be researching an animal and writing about it using the writing process. This will be a two to three week project. The children will be taking notes, editing, and rewriting.
We had a sub today. Mrs. Rice was out with a migraine. We did a great job for the sub.
We are working on story problems in math. We have a checklist of steps to go through to solve a problem. We had a rough day behaviorally. We talked about appropriate behaviors and our classroom being a safe place to learn.
We picked our animal for our research project. In science we opened up a bean seed that we had soaked in a wet paper towel. We observed and drew the parts of a seed. Ask me what the seed coat, is or what the embryo is, or even what else the seed has in it. (stored food for the seed to use until it grows).
In science we observed the seeds we planted on Monday. We watched some Irish dancers. It was really cool!

We are working on nonfiction text features again this week. Ask me to tell you some of the features of a nonfiction text and what they mean. Some examples are: table of contents, glossary, index, bold faced words, italicized words, headings, pictures, captions, and labels.
We read a nonfiction story about vegetables. We wrote about our favorite vegetable. In math we are looking at fact families. We are also working on composing and decomposing numbers to 20. In science we started our organisms unit by drawing a picture of a living thing and telling what it needs.
We got new carpet spots today and Mrs. Rice rearranged the room a little bit. In science we talked about what all living things need to live. We read a nonfiction story about frogs and toads. Ask me how they are different.
We will be working on story problems in math. We will be doing both addition and subtraction story problems. We will continue to work on them for a while. Ask me what steps I need to do to complete a story problem.
In science we are looking at seeds. We are describing four different seeds and talking about how plants and animals are alike and different. We will be planting on Monday.

We read a nonfiction story about being a beekeeper. We had to decide if we wanted to be a beekeeper or not after reading the story. Ask me what I decided and why. We read a nonfiction story about Dr. Seuss. We had our vision tested today.
We celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday today. Estelle’s grandma donated Dr. Seuss pencils and we all got one. In social studies we are working on then and now. We are bringing a sheet home to help us find out what kind of toys and games our parents and grandparents played and compare it to what we play today.
We celebrated Zeke’s birthday today. We worked on story problems in math. We got new carpet squares that we picked ourselves.
No School President’s Day
We had an assembly today. It was a beat-box performance. We loved the music and sounds he made. We started our time lines this afternoon. We will be sharing them in front of the class. Next in social studies will be comparing then and now.
We are working on non-fiction text features in reading. We are also working on asking questions before, during, and after reading. We are also working on prefixes, base words, and suffixes and how a prefix or suffix changes the base (root) word.
We shared our time lines today. We did a great job and got to learn a lot about our friends. We read a very interesting story about slavery. It is called Henry’s Freedom Box. We incorporated history and reading by reading this non-fiction book and asking questions.

We had an assembly today. The DeLaSalle ONYX step team did some step routines for us and then taught us some steps to do. It was fun to stand up and try to step with them. Emily’s mom came in to read us a story for her halvsie birthday. It was a funny Pinkalicious story.
Yeah, it is finally Valentine’s Day. Our bags are full of fun valentines that we made for each other. We got to spend time opening our valentines and thanking each other. It was a fun afternoon.
We are 100 days smarter today. We did lots of 100 activities today and even read 3 100 day stories. This has been an exciting week. We are back to having recess right after lunch.
Please remember to have all my winter things in a reusable bag. That helps speed up the process of getting ready.

Monday, February 20th no school President’s Day
We started a new math and social studies unit today. In social studies we will be studying history. We will start with making time lines. In math we are working on addition, subtraction, word problems and combinations of a number.
We had an assembly today. We learned about the life of Jackie Robinson. It was a great play. We also went on pebble go from the Hale website and listened to a story about Jackie Robinson.
We had a great day today. Unfortunately it was too cold to go outside. We did some go noodle to keep us moving. We are learning about prefixes this week. Ask me what pre, un, and re mean. We are also learning about commas to separate the day from the month, date from the year, and listing items in a row.
We have been playing math games all week making combinations of 10. We got to have recess today. We are getting excited for the 100th day of school next week.
We celebrated Anneliese’s halvsie birthday today. Her mom came in and read a story to us. It was fun. We had the Hale Book Café today. The hot chocolate was delicious.

It was winter walk to school day. Many of us walked to school or got off the bus and walked around the school. It was fun. We are learning to measure with rulers. We made our own paper ruler and measured items around the room.
We had our last art adventure today. We enjoyed looking at the art and discussing it with each other. We did some Groundhog Day activities. We are hoping for an early spring.

We are talking about folktales this week. We read the story The Little Red Hen Makes A Pizza. We are also talking about story grammar which includes main character, setting, problem, and solution. We are learning about trade and barter in social studies.
We did not have outdoor activities today because there was not enough snow. We continue to count coins in math. I should be able to trade money (five pennies for a nickel etc) and count a mixed amount of coins up to $1.00.
Yea!!! We got snow so we were able to go outside for gym and enjoy. We read a story about trading called The Scarecrow’s Hat. Ask me about the story and what trades took place.
We are finishing up money and moving into measurement. We will be done with this math unit next week. We had art adventure today. We celebrated Owen’s birthday. His parents came in and read a Star Wars story to us. We liked it.

We started our new math unit today. We are starting with time. I should be able to tell time on the hour and half hour. We will also be doing money and measurement. You can help me at home with any of these. J

We celebrated Scarlett’s halvsie birthday today. Her actual birthday is in July. We made a flashlight work and talked about ways electricity can be used for light, motion, and sound.

In reading we continue to work on strategies to read unfamiliar words and understanding text focusing on retell using sequence, main idea, and key details.
We continue to work like scientists. We have made a complete circuit using a battery in a holder, a light bulb in a holder, a knife switch and three wires. It is amazing to watch them work. Ask them about electricity.
We finished our geometry unit. We all did a great job on our final assessment. We got time today to play with wooden geo blocks and build things. It was fun. It was our last day of scooter city. Ask me what my favorite part was or what was all in scooter city.
We continue to read different versions of the gingerbread man story. We have read about the gingerbread bear, pirates, and cowboy, along with the gingerbread baby. Ask me which story has been my favorite and can I retell it to you.
We celebrated Marit’s birthday today. Her actual birthday is during break. Have a great winter break!

We started our electricity unit in science today. The children had to light a light bulb using a battery, a wire, and a small light bulb. It was so fun to see them work through the challenge and work together as scientists.
We will finish our geometry unit next week and start our next unit of measurement, time, and money in January. The last part of geometry focuses on triangles and 3D shapes
We are reading different versions of the gingerbread man stories this week and next. We are also working on adjectives and synonyms/antonyms. Ask me to retell a version of the gingerbread man story.
We made a complete system using a battery, battery holder, light bulb, light bulb holder, and two wires. Our goal was to make the light bulb light up. We used what we learned in geometry to make a paper quilt square.
Friday December 16th We will celebrate Marit’s birthday
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break. We came back ready to learn. In reading we are working on strategies to read unfamiliar words and understanding text focusing on retell using sequence, main idea, and key details.
We had the Sinphonia concert today. It was fun to listen to the music and watch some of our classmates sing in the choir. We have a new behavior system in our room. We get a green chip to put on our desk every morning. At the end of the day if we still have our green chip we can trade it in for a green ticket.
We are working on geometry in math. Ask me what shapes I have learned about and how many sides they have. We have also learned about quadrilaterals and polygons. Ask me what each is and see if I can draw an example.
We seem to like having the chip on our desk and trading it in for a green ticket. We are talking about trade, barter, cost, and benefits in social studies. Maybe they could trade in some of their green tickets for a new box of 24 crayons or a chap stick for those dry winter lips. J

December 5 – 16th Scooter City in gym plus scooter city night
The children did a great job for Mrs. Walter. We are working this week on strategies to read unfamiliar words. We are also working on word endings and what they mean. (s=more than one, ed= already happened, ing=taking place right now)
It is great to be back! In social studies we are finishing up unit 1 with the Pledge of Allegiance and rules of the flag. Ask me if I remember any rules. Our next unit is Economics where we will be talking about scarcity, cost, benefit, trade, etc.
We had our annual evacuation drill today. The children did a great job walking over to OLP, sitting in their gym, then walking back to school. I am very proud of them.
We have an emotion of the week, which goes with our social emotional learning. Ask your child what the emotion of the week is and what the zones are. They should also be able to tell you strategies to help them when they are in a certain zone.
We had an assembly today. We watched a Native American family share their music and dance with us as well as tell us about their culture. It was amazing.

It was so great to see and talk to all of you for conferences. Thanks again for all you do. We finished our first science kit on rocks today. Ask you child to list the size of rocks from smallest to biggest. (clay,silt,sand,gravel,pebble,cobble,boulder)
The Science Museum started teaching today. They will be here six times and teaching the children about properties, problem and solution. The program is Engineering in Elementary. The children will be making hand pollinators. Ask them what the problem is and how they are going to solve it. We celebrated Jake’s birthday today. His dad came in to read. We love guest readers.
One of the many things we are working on in math is story problems and all the steps to solve a problem. Mrs. Rice is listening to us read and seeing if we are ready to move to a new level.
We are working on rules and citizenship in social studies. Ask me what I can do to be a good citizen of my school and home.

We are working on place value in math. We have been focusing on tens and ones. We have also been working on greater than and less than, plus putting numbers in order from least to greatest.
Mrs. Rice moved some desks around today to try to help us stay focused and quiet during work time. It has been a busy week with after school classes. We read a story called Big Al. Ask me what kind of fish Al was and what was his problem.
We picked our favorite rock today and wrote about it using the property words color, luster, size, shape, and weight. Ask me about my rock. We played a game where someone had to pick out my rock based on what I wrote. It was fun.

We are working on place value in math this week. We are practicing tens and ones and grouping. A helpful writing activity for my homework would be to have me write my numbers. We started our new science kit today. It is called rocks, pebbles, sand, and silt. We had art in the new art room. Ask me about it.
We looked at 5 rocks today and talked about properties. Ask me what a property is and some of the properties we are learning about. I got to compare my rocks to a neighbor’s rocks.

It was walk to school Wednesday today. The busses let us off and we walked the rest of the way to school. We are almost done with the alphabet morning worksheets. Next will be sight word worksheets to help us build our sight word knowledge and help us with our spelling.
We are working on writing a complete sentence in reading. We are also working on short and long vowel sounds. We do both reading stations and math stations. Ask me what about them.
We took a test today on the laptops. It was new to us and we did a fantastic job of listening.

It was picture day! That is always an exciting day for first graders. Retake day is in October. Pictures should be here in a few weeks, however, the class picture does not come until spring.
We started reading centers and math workshop today. J
We will finish up our ABC books this week. You will get to see mine at conferences. We had a dental health presentation today. We got a bag with lots of good dental health tools in it.
It was walk to school Wednesday today. The busses let us off and we walked the rest of the way to school. It is also International Peace Day. We watched a peace video at lunch and signed our name to the word peace. It will hang in the lunchroom.
We celebrated Mirabel’s birthday today. Her dad came in and read us her favorite story from home. It was a book with no pictures but funny words. We love guest readers and listening to stories.
We are learning about the coins this week. Help me practice at home naming the coins and telling you how much they are worth. We had sketchpad time today. We love drawing and coloring in our sketchpads.
We are focusing on Random Acts of Kindness. We are working on learning how to treat each other with respect. We are also working on responsibility, self-discipline, integrity and fairness. This goes hand in hand with our social studies unit.
Mrs. Rice rearranged the room last night. We have new desk spots, new carpet spots, and a whole new room arrangement.
We had a really good day today!
We are still working on our ABC books. We are learning how to work quietly at our desks while Mrs. Rice has reading groups. It was another great day. Mr. Fitzgerald visited our classroom during calendar time.
We celebrated Sonja’s birthday today. Her dad came in and read us her favorite story from home. We love guest readers and listening to stories. We had to use our pin numbers at lunch today. Please help me practice my number for school lunch.

No School Labor Day
We are focusing on respect, responsibility, and self -discipline. These are from Random Acts of Kindness. We are learning how to treat each other and be a school family.
We are working on the alphabet. We are reading different ABC books and making one of our own. Mrs. Rice is reading with each of us while we work. We are practicing working quietly at our desks.
We talked about cooperation. We tried to do an activity where we worked with a group to build something using cooperation. Ask me how it went. We played quick images in math. Mrs. Rice showed us a pattern on a ten frame and we had to try to copy it on our own white board. It was fun and we did a great job. We even got some time to just draw.
We continue to read ABC stories and work on our own ABC books. We learned about the I-pads today and how to use them.
We are excited about the book fair.

We had a great first day of school. We celebrated Estelle’s birthday too! We learned how to sit on our new chairs. We have desks in first grade. We also learned about our crayons. We saw some old friends and made some new friends.
We had a good day. We are getting to know each other and getting to know our classroom.
We got a new student today. We now have 27 kids in our class. We have been talking about respect and responsibility. Ask me to explain what those words mean.
We decorated paper cakes today and cut them out after learning about scissor safety. We will be making a birthday graph tomorrow.
We celebrated Jalen’s birthday today. Mr. Fitzgerald came in and read Jalen’s favorite book from home. We made a birthday graph for our class. We drew/colored in our sketch pads this afternoon.

We had art adventure today. We had Mrs. Clayton as a teacher. Mrs. Rice was there in the morning for a few minutes and then she left to go to a science class.
We sorted river rock by size today. Ask me if I can name the different sizes of rocks. We started a new math unit on time and money. We worked on our coins today. We have also worked on time to the hour and ½ hour.
We had gym inside again. We read a Valentine story today and did a special heart project. Lauren’s mom read us a story for her birthday. We went to the computer lab then opened our Valentine’s. It is our 100th day of school. I am 100 days smarter!

We got a new student today. His name is Joe and we are showing our good citizenship by helping him get used to a new school and new routines. We read a non fiction persuasive text today called Eat Your Vegetables. Ask me about some of the vegetables in the book.
We are learning about asking questions when we read. We are also working on main idea and key details. We played a math game called how many am I hiding. We started our science kit electricity with a KWL. Ask me what that means.
We read a funny story about a chicken that goes to school and thinks she is in a fancy barn. The children really enjoyed this story. Ask them what the chicken saw and what she thought it was. Mrs. Rice gave us a battery, a light bulb, and a wire and we figured out how to use those three things to make the light bulb light. It was super fun.
We worked on special places on the battery and light bulb that would make the light bulb light. Electricity is fun. We did story problems in math on our dry erase boards. We read a story about bunnies and a fox. Ask me to retell the story.
We did a graphic organizer with the main idea of vegetables in the middle and key ideas about vegetables all around it. Then we started thinking about wonderings this story gave us. We wrote what we wonder in our story clubs. We went to the computer lab today for Friday choice time.

Happy Monday. We read a poem today called “Five Little Pumpkins.” Mrs. Rice made a book for us that we are illustrating to tell the story. We worked on digraphs and blends today in reading. Ask me if I can tell you what each is or give you an example. We played a penny game in math. We recorded heads and tails of 7 and 10 pennies. Then we talked about probability. We learned more rules about the flag. See if I remember them.
Mrs. Rice was out sick today. We had Mrs. Clayton for a teacher. We had a good day. It is fun to watch our turtle grow and explore his home. We took a vote and named him Caramel.
We played a math game called how many am I hiding.
We read a funny story about a skeleton with the hiccups. See if I remember how he tried to get rid of them and what finally worked. We took a social studies test on rules, the flag, good citizenship, and the president. Next week we start a science unit called electricity. J
We decorated gourds today. It was a lot of fun. We read a Story about pumpkins. We had the read – a-thon assembly. Our class won the read a thon and we got a trophy which is on display on the cow desk. Way to go Superstars!!!!

Welcome back! We had new desk spots when we got back this morning. We are working on writing sight words in the morning. We read a story about shadows. It talked about how the earth blocks the sun from the moon. It was very interesting.
In math we are looking at combinations of the number 10.
We worked on vocabulary words today. We are learning to write complete sentences. We are learning about the president. Ask me if I know who the president and vice president are and how they get their jobs. I should also be able to tell you who can vote for the president.
We have been talking about long and short vowels this week. We are learning about the ways to make a long vowel. We have also been practicing writing sentences. The reading minutes are adding up. Thanks for getting those reading slips turned in. It was picture retake day.
We decided to name our turtle today. It has been fun watching it hatch from the egg and start to grow. It has been a long process and we have loved watching him. We know we can’t touch him. We are talking about the president and who can vote. We took a vote for a turtle name and it was a tie. Ask me what the three names are. J
We did partner reading today. This was the first time. Ask me who my partner was and what are some rules of partner reading. We read a story about shapes and made a picture with shapes.

Our new words for this week are keep, of and the. We are working on writing sight words and sentences. The Red Cross came today and talked about fire safety. We have been talking about being a good citizen and are now moving on to the flag and then the president.
In reading we read a fun story about Charles Tiger. Please ask me what Charles lost and how he found it. We worked on the short o today and we finished taking our math test on the computer. It was a very busy day.
We read about the flag today. We talked about what the stars and stripes represent. We talked about the pledge of allegiance and put a new flag up in our classroom. We are going to say the pledge in the morning as part of our peace pledge.
We had an author visit today. It was really amazing. Please ask me about his visit and what he did. We read a funny story called Pigs In A Rig. Have me tell you what the pigs fell into and how they got clean. We talked about rules of the flag. See if I remember any of them.
We read another pig story. We talked about the short I vowel sound and rhyming words. Then we wrote real and silly words that rhyme with pig. We are going outside this afternoon for Friday choice time. We want to enjoy the nice weather and play with all our first grade friends.

We are working on short vowels, rhyming, and writing sentences this week. Our new vocabulary words this week are A, don’t, and one. We are also learning to write because. We also tallied our weather graph for the month of September.
In finished our reading test on the computer. On Friday we will start the math test. We read a fun story called Ten Dogs In The Window. In the story they counted backward and also matched dogs to certain people. We tried to guess which people would get which dog. I am good at making predictions and telling why I made that prediction.
We had a fantastic day. We read an ABC story and continued to work in our ABC books. We took a really hard math test today so Mrs. Rice can see what we already know and what we need to focus on in first grade.
We all had socks and tennis shoes today yeah!! It was not our best day. We had a lot of behavior and bathroom issues. Maybe it was the rainy weather. We talked about what it means to be a great first grader. Tomorrow is a new day J
We were the best first graders ever!!! Wow what a super star day. We finished sharing our “all about me” sheets and made connections with others in our class who like what we like. We did a counting math lesson working on one more and one less.
We looked at coin money today and talked about each coin and how much they are worth. We did a science lesson on our senses. Ask me about my five senses. Ask me about the coins to see if I can name them and how much they are worth. Put out coins and see if I can pick the right one or sort a pile of change.
We are almost finished with our ABC books. We did a fun science lesson where we used our eyes to try to find colors in nature that matched colors we had on a paint sample. We had Friday choice time because we had such a good week.
